Lake Forest is more vibrant than ever!  There is always something exciting to do or see.  Whether it is taking in a show, enjoying an outdoor festival, attending a community class, or simply hanging out and enjoying Lake Forest’s unique culture, it is the people that make Lake Forest special.  This is a place to work, live and call home.

“Houses can form a neighborhood but only people can make it a community."

Chicago's North Shore Communities:

Bannockburn Deerfield

Glenview Highland Park
Kenilworth Lake Bluff
Lake Forest Libertyville
Lincolnshire Northbrook
Vernon Hills Wilmette

Historically, the North Shore referred to the area serviced by the now defunct Chicago North Shore and Milwaukee Railroad, which ran along Lake Michigan's western shore between Chicago and Milwaukee from 1896 until 1963. Today, it is best defined by the suburbs north of Chicago that lie along the beautiful lakefront. Now, as it did then, the area includes many of the most affluent communities in the Midwest and throughout the United States.

These communities are home to various regional shopping destinations, including Westfield Old Orchard, Renaissance Place, The Glen Town Center and Northbrook Court shopping malls. The North Shore is also noteworthy for being one of the few remaining agglomerations of streetcar suburbs in the United States.

The North Shore is also the home of the Ravinia Festival, a world-class outdoor music theater. The Green Bay Trail, an award-winning pedestrian and bicycle path, begins in Wilmette and runs north just to the east of the Chicago Botanic Garden and past the front gate of Ravinia Festival park all the way up to Illinois Beach State Park in Zion, alongside Metra's Union Pacific North Line railroad tracks.

The area also lends its name to an area hospital system North Shore University Health System.

Tips for Finding the Perfect Community

1. Make a list of all of the amenities that are close by in the neighborhood you are considering as your new residence

Keep in mind what distances and routes to each of these places are acceptable and what are not.

2. Determine what the best features of the neighborhoods are. This is especially helpful if you are deciding between a few different neighborhoods.

Parks nearby?
Is it visually appealing?
Are there quiet areas?
Are the people friendly?
Is it clean?ees and foliage?
Do the lots have large or small yards?
Are there walkways and are they easily accessible?
Is it a safe neighborhood?
What are the market values of the homes in the area?
Are there many houses for sale?
How long ago was the community developed?
What is the average age of the people in the area?
Are there families with small children in the area?
What is the proximity to schools?
Are there community events or organizations?

3. Walk around in the neighborhood. The best way to determine the cleanliness and friendliness of the neighborhood is to walk around in it and meet its residents.
